Lung Cancer

Lung cancer, also known as bronchial carcinoma. Lung cancers is a malignant lung tumor. It starts when abnormal growth and multiplication of cells occurs in an uncontrolled way.

There are two main types of lung cancer and are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, depending on how they appear under a microscope.

 

NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER (NSCLC)

Non Small Cell Lung Canccer

Adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma are the subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer. These subtypes grouped together as NSCLC.

Adenocarcinoma: Adenocarcinomas is type in which cells normally secrete substances such as mucus.

Mainly currently Smoking and formerly Smoked people are suffering from this kind of lung cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma: Squamous cell carcinomas develops in squamous cells. Squamous cells are flat cells which line the inside of the airways in the lungs. This kind of Cancer is found in the central part of the lungs, near a main airway (bronchus).

Large cell (undifferentiated) carcinoma: Growth and spread of this kind of Lung cancer are very fast. A subtype of large cell carcinoma also known as large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. This is a fast-growing cancer that is very similar to small cell lung cancer.

SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER (SCLC)

Small Cell Lung Cancer

This type of lung cancer has a tendency to to grow and spread faster than NSCLC. About 70% of people with SCLC will have cancer that has already spread at the time they are diagnosed.

SYMPTOMS:

Following are the symptoms:

  • Problem in breath
  • Changes to the voice such as hoarseness
  • Pain in Chest
  • Blood is coming during coughing or spitting
  • A new cough that continued or does not go away
  • Infection in chest which lasts longer than three weeks or repeats it again and again
  • Enlarged fingertips
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss (Reason unknown)

CAUSES

Following are the factors which affects risk of lung cancer:

  • Exposure to asbestos
  • Smoking
  • Second-hand (passive) smoking
  • Exposure to radon (radioactive gas)
  • In contact of exposure to arsenic, cadmium, nickel, diesel fumes
  • Family history
  • History of lung diseases
  • Older age.

DIAGNOSIS 

Diagnosis of lung cancer can be carried out by various ways. Some them are as below:

Chest x-ray

Chest X-Ray helps in detection of larger tumours (more than 1cm wide).

CT scan

A computerised tomography (CT) scan uses x-ray beams to take pictures inside the body and create a cross-sectional image. A CT scan identify minute tumours and also able to provide detail information about the tumour and lymph nodes.

PET scan

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan provides information about lung cancer stage after a diagnosis.

Lung function test

Lung function test also known as spirometry. This test provides information about function of Lung.

Sputum cytology

In this test sputum (mucus) is examined under a microscope to check for abnormal cells.
