An Allergy is described as hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system. This reacts to harmless substances in the environment. These harmless substances are known as allergens. Allergens are found in dust mites, pets, pollen, insects, ticks, foods etc. These reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid which results in an inflammatory response that can become uncomfortable to dangerous.
Mild allergies like hay fever are very common. Red eyes, itchiness, and runny nose, eczema, hives (Skin Rash), or an asthma attack are symptoms of Hay Fever. In Asthma, Allergies can play a major role. Anaphylaxis is a condition of allergy which cause life threatening reaction by environment or dietary allergens or to medication.
Test to detect Allergy
Allergic condition can be diagnose using variety of tests. Persons history of exposure helps in diagnose and selection of particular test.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Allergy
|Nose||Swelling of the nasal mucosa (allergic rhinitis)|
|Eyes||Redness and itching of the conjunctiva (allergic conjunctivitis)|
|Nostrils||Sneezing, coughing, bronchoconstriction, wheezing and dyspnea, attacks of asthma, in severe cases the airway constricts due to swelling known as laryngeal edema|
|Ears||Feeling of fullness, Probably pain, and impaired hearing because of lack of eustachian tube drainage|
|Skin||Rashes ( eczema and hives (urticaria))|
|Gastrointestinal tract||Abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea|
Cause of Allergy
Host and environmental factors are two categories. Host factors include heredity, gender, race, and age. Alterations in exposure to infectious diseases during early childhood, environmental pollution, allergen levels, and dietary changes are Major Environmental factors are
Airborne particles such as dust or pollen are allergens. These Airborne particles may cause symptoms in body parts which are directly in contact with air, such as eyes, nose, lungs etc. For example hypersensitivity reaction conjointly called rhinitis, causes irritation in the nose, sneezing, itching, and redness in the eyes. Inhaled allergens may result in asthmatic symptoms, caused by narrowing of the airways (bronchoconstriction) and augmented production of secretion within the lungs, shortness of breath (dyspnea), coughing and wheezing.
Aside from these ambient allergens, allergic reactions can caused by foods, insect stings, and reactions to medications like aspirin and antibiotics such as penicillin. Symptoms of food reaction include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating and itchy skin. Latex, are common causes of allergic reactions which is known as eczema. Rashes, or swelling and inflammation within the skin are caused by Skin allergies.
Factors that causes Allergy
Allergy reaction depends upon person to person susceptibly of foods. However, 90% of allergic reactions are caused by cow’s milk, soy, eggs, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
Non food proteins
Latex can affect respiratory, and systemic reaction. Latex sensitivity among healthcare workers is higher.
The most prevalent response to latex is an allergic contact dermatitis, a delayed hypersensitive reaction appearing as dry, crusted lesions. Patients suffering from latex allergy may have sensitivities to chestnut, kiwifruit, and avocado. These patients often have perioral itching and local urticaria.
Toxins interacting with proteins
Urushiol, that itself is not a protein, acts as a hapten and causes changes to the shape of integral membrane proteins on exposed skin cells. The immune system does not acknowledge the affected cells as parts of the body, causing a T-cell-mediated immune response. As a result of that the reaction between urushiol and membrane proteins causes redness, swelling, papules, vesicles, blisters, and streaking.
Twins are likely to have the same allergic. Allergic parents are more likely to have allergic children. Allergies in children’s are likely to be more severe than those in children of non allergic parents. Risk of development of allergy in boys is higher than girls. However, females are more likely to be affected by asthma.
Other environmental factors
In industrialized countries Allergic diseases are more common than in countries that are more traditional or agricultural. In urban populations rate of allergic disease is higher than in rural populations.
Late phase response
Allergy may caused by reaction from medicine which usually occurs within 2-24hours. This is due to the migration of other leukocytes such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils and macrophages to the initial site. Late-phase reaction can cause Asthma.
Consumption of foods like celery, citrus fruit, raw pepper, margarine, and vegetable oil during pregnancy cause eczema. After birth, an early introduction of solid food and high diversity before 17 week could increase a child’s risk for allergies.
Treatments for allergies include avoiding known allergens, steroids that modify the immune system. Homeopathy is one of the best and popular medical science. In homeopathy selection of medicine is based upon the theory of individualization of symptoms and cause. The aim of homeopathy is to treat underlying cause and individual susceptibility not just a treatment of diseases. There are many medicines are available for treatment of Allergy. Selection of medicine is based on cause, location, modalities and extension of the diseases.
